"We all face our own obstacles in
life. Whether you rise to the challenge of overcoming them can only be
decided by one person... you. Nothing is impossible if we dare
to face our fears and believe in ourselves..."
The
boundaries of Warren MacDonald’s life were redefined in April 1997. Climbing to
the summit of Hinchinbrook Island’s (Australia) tallest peak, he
became trapped beneath a one-ton slab of rock in a freak rockfall. Two
full days later he
was rescued, only to undergo the amputation of both his legs.
Just ten
months later, he climbed Tasmania’s Cradle Mountain using a modified
wheelchair and the seat of his pants. This set the tone for his
reclaiming a life of adventure, refusing to be compromised by his
“disability”.
His
first book, “One Step Beyond” recalls the horror of his accident,
turning quickly to triumph as he overcomes incredible adversity to
experience once again the wild places he loves. “One Step Beyond”
is now in it’s 4th printing having sold over 10,000 copies.
Warren’s
expeditions have taken him around the globe. In February 2003, he
became the first double above knee amputee to reach the summit of
Africa’s tallest mountain, Mt Kilimanjaro. His film
documenting the epic four-week journey to
Tasmania’s Federation Peak, “The Second Step” has been acclaimed
worldwide, winning 4 international awards including Grand Prize at the
prestigious “Banff 2002 Mountain Film Festival”.
Warren
now travels the world, sharing his story with others, encouraging
individuals and businesses alike to view change as an opportunity
rather than a hindrance. His is a remarkable story that confirms that
the only limitations we face are within our own minds.
